A CD
with its jewel case, or a vinyl phonograph record (LP) with its
jacket. An album usually has 6 to 12 cuts (tracks) which translates
into about 15 minutes of playing time on each side of the disk.
Often, single cuts from an album are released as singles. See Cross-links: RECORD, COMPACT DISK (CD).
Album Cover:
The decorative wrap of a vinyl record album
consisting of photographs and/or artwork which is used to entice
a consumer to purchase the record. The album title along with
credit lines and back liner notes may also appear on the cover.
CDs are usually packaged in clear plastic boxes
with this artwork and information printed on paper inserts.
To maintain maximum protection for the artwork and liner notes
with respect to the U.S. Copyright Law, the copyright notice is
normally placed on both the front and back covers of the album
(not on the spine). This notice should also be placed on the paper
inserts of CD packaging. See Cross-links: PACKAGING,
PACKAGE, COPYRIGHT LAW
under "Notice of Copyright".
Album Jacket:
A cover, usually shrink wrapped in plastic,
that a vinyl record album is slipped into for protection and storage. See Cross-links:
BACK LINER NOTES, LINER
NOTES, ALBUM under "Album Cover."
Cast Album:
Also called an "Original Cast Album,"
it contains the music and/or the literary performance of a theatrical
production (such as a Broadway musical). See Cross-links: MUSIC
under "Dramatic Music."
Coupling Album:
Collectively combining the works of different
artists onto a new CD (also called a compilation CD), or combining
recordings of a single artist from a variety of albums and/or
singles onto a new CD.
Under U.S. Copyright Law, these type recordings are defined
to be a "compilation" and are afforded statutory protection
separately (in addition to) the protection already in existence
for the pre-existing individual selections. See Cross-links: COLLABORATOR,
ALBUM, PARTNERSHIP under "Joint Venture," RECORD under
"Cover Record," RECORD MERCHANDISING COMPANY, CONTRACT-RECORDING
CONTRACT clause #10, COPYRIGHT LAW
under "Compulsory License," "Compilation,"
"Collective Work," and "Joint Work."
Diamond Album:
A music recording recognized by the Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA) to have sold 10,000,000
or more units. See Cross-links: HIT, ALBUM
under "Platinum Album."
Gold Album:
A music recording recognized by the Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA) to have sold 500,000 units. See Cross-links:
HIT, ALBUM under "Platinum
Album."
Platinum Album:
A music recording recognized by the Recording
Industry Association of America (RIAA) to have sold 1,000,000
units. See Cross-links: HIT, ALBUM under
"Gold Album."
Soundtrack Album:
CD or vinyl record that contains the actual
soundtrack music of a movie. Also called "Original Soundtrack"
or "OST". See Cross-links: PACKAGER,
COPYRIGHT LAW under "Motion
Pictures," and "Sound Recordings."
