BAR CODE
A code printed on retail merchandise that
can be read by an optical scanner. It consists of bars, spaces,
and numbers. This code in the record industry is used to identify
the manufacturer, product, and type of product (e.g., CD, CD-ROM,
etc.). The use of bar codes benefits retailers, wholesalers, and
manufacturers in that they provide close inventory monitoring
with automatic resupply capability which speeds up the ability
to properly warehouse and ship products. Bar codes enable the
monitoring of the sales of specific artists, specific titles,
releases and labels, per capita sales, customer head counts, returns,
and the calculation of specific kinds of thefts. See: DEMOGRAPHIC SURVEYS,
RACK JOBBER, ONE-STOP, RECORD WHOLESALER, RECORD RETAILER.
