CHARTS
1) Categorized and numerically ranked lists
of current top selling singles, albums, or videos, e.g., pop charts,
soul charts, and country charts. The higher the ranking, the more
popular and successful the CD or video. In general, the rankings
are based on sales and radio airplay. Trade magazines such as
Billboard give new updated chart listings each week. The wider
the geographical scope of the chart, the more important the ranking.
Radio programming is usually primarily based on chart rankings.
Also, retailers and subdistributors use the charts to determine
their inventories. Further, retailers use charts as "bait"
to entice consumers to purchase current hits. Obviously, the bottom
line for record sales is also greatly affected by the charts and
therefore they influence such things as new record production
and general manufacturing decisions.
The promoman may use the charts to try to persuade a radio
station to air a new cut that closely matches current top hits.
Heading back up the creative line, the recording artist will use
current and past chart rankings of his recordings to negotiate
new contracts (or even to renegotiate existing contracts), and
to procure top management and booking agents. Likewise, songwriters
will use the clout of their chart busters to advance their careers.
Music publishers use the charts to evaluate record producers and
artists when trying to place their songs. And, performance rights
societies can enhance their notoriety as the result of hits they
administer. Also, higher performance licensing fees can be negotiated
