anyone who works for another under contract.

Independent Contractor:
A person (or business) who performs
a service for another under verbal or written contract, as opposed
to a person who works for wages or salary (employee). The contractor
supplies the tools, materials, and labor, and also retains control
of the means, method, and manner of production or execution concerning
the work or service contracted. Neither the contractor nor the
contractee may independently terminate the contract before completion
of the work by the contractor. An independent contractor is not,

Union Contractor:
A union steward musician (AFM) or singer
(AFTRA), called a music contractor, that performs any additional
services (usually supervisory functions) with regard to a musical
event or recording session. He secures the musicians and/or singers,
supplies them with proper information, makes sure that they and
their specified instruments and equipment arrive at the event
or session on time, coordinates the event, coaches, conducts,
computes session fees, submits the proper union forms to the employer
and union office, etc.. The contractor is required to be present
at all times during the sessions when his group is participating.

It is not uncommon for a contractor to specialize in a specified
area of the creative arts, for example, in jingles or motion pictures,
etc.. A contractor usually has a reputation which rests on his
experience and on the quality of the musicians or artists in his
pool of available performers.
