A jingle may reflect the full theme of
the commercial, or be merely the opening ("front") or
closing ("tag") of the commercial. The spoken middle
section of the spot is called the "doughnut."
Some jingles are produced with actors lip-synching
the vocals. This optimizes the talents of both the singer and
actor and hopefully increases the quality of the overall advertisement.
Many jingles are now performed by (and
sometimes composed by) super star artists. Soft drink commercials
especially. These artists may command up to, and in excess of,
$1,000,000 for such spots.
More normally, the writer of a jingle works on a flat fee (work for hire) basis. He often works for an ad agency or for an independent producer. Other composers will also act as the producer and arrange for and produce the entire spot. He may receive $
