of Patents and Trademarks, U.S. Department of Commerce. It grants
to the inventor (or in some cases his heirs or assignees) of a
new, useful, or operative idea, e.g., a process, machine, design,
substance, life form, etc., certain exclusive property rights.
These rights are guaranteed by patent law for a defined and limited

Patentable:
The state of being suitable for patent,
i.e., when an invention is eligible under patent law to be issued
a patent. To be eligible, an invention must be a new, useful,
or operative idea such as a process, machine, design, substance,

Patent Agent:
A person who is not a patent attorney,
but is licensed to prepare and submit inventions for patent consideration

Patent and Trademark Office:
A division of the U.S. Department of Commerce whose main functions are:
1) To consider and grant patent, trademark,
and trade name registrations,
2) To administer federal law that protects patent and trademark
owners,
3) To record ownership transfers,
4) To maintain search files of U.S. and foreign patents and trademarks,
5) To provide facilities for public searches of patents and trademarks,
6) To participate in legal proceedings involving the issuance
of patents and trademarks,
7) To represent the U.S. in international efforts to cooperate
on patent and trademark policy, and
8) To maintain a roster of qualified practicing patent attorneys
and agents.
