The type of programming style a particular
radio station has. There are many different types of formats.
Often, formats are not clear cut. The style or types of music
played and the personalities of the disc jockeys define the format
of a particular station. New format types come and go
below
is a list of formats that are of note with regard to the radio
broadcasting industry. See Cross-links: MARKET

Active Rock:
A radio station programming format where
the music played is "Hard Rock," "Metal" and
"Heavy Metal."

Adult Album Alternative (AAA):
A radio station programming format where
the music played appeals to adults rather than teenagers. It includes
a much broader playlist than that of hit radio. The playlist on
AAA radio may include Rock, Folk-Rock, Country-Rock, Modern Rock,
Blues and Folk.

Adult Alternative:
A radio format where the music played appeals
to adults rather than teenagers. A station with this format plays
current hits to include single releases and popular album tracks
of Rock, Pop, Country-Rock, Folk-Rock and Blues.

Adult Contemporary (AC):
A radio programming format where the music
played is mainstream Pop and Rock, plus Crossovers (no Hard Rock
however). The music is drawn from songs that have been popular
over a period of the last 20 years or so. It used to be called
MOR (Middle-of-the-Road). Listeners are usually 25 years old and
up.

Album Oriented Rock (AOR):
A radio station format. AOR stations may
play 5 or more cuts from a particular album back-to-back. Programming
ranges from Progressive to Top 40. DJ's will often relate artist
and other information to the listeners. This type of format was
especially popular during the 70's and 80's. Listeners are usually
in the 16 to 32 year old range.

Beautiful Music:
A radio station programming format where
the music played is primarily Instrumental. Both contemporary
and past hits are played.

Big Band:
A radio station programming format where
the music played is from the '30's and 40's and/or interpretations
of the "Standards" of that era
including recent
interpretations. This format is primarily aimed at elderly adults
and is sometimes referred to as "Adult Standards" or
as a "Nostalgia" format.

Classical:
A radio programming format where the music
played is Classical, Orchestral, or Chamber Music.

Classic Rock:
A radio station programming format where
Rock "Oldies" of the 60's, 70's and 80's are played.

Contemporary Christian:
A radio format where Contemporary Christian
music is played.

Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR):
A radio station programming format where
Top 40 hits, i.e., current hits are played.

Country:
A radio station format where the music
played is Country, Country Rock, and Crossovers.

Dance:
A radio format where the music played is
primarily produced for dancing and is often called "CHR-Rhythmic."
Stations that play Dance Music from the 80's and 90's are called
"Rhythmic AC."

Easy Listening:
A radio station format. The music played
is Contemporary Instrumental.

Gospel:
A radio station programming format where
the music played is Gospel and Contemporary Christian.

Hot Adult Contemporary (Hot
AC):
A programming format of some Adult Contemporary
stations where the music played has a significant amount of new
Rock/Pop releases as well as CHR.

Jazz:
A radio station programming format where
the music played is Jazz.

Modern Rock:
A radio station format where the music
played is mostly current Rock performed by artists who have become
popular during the past five to ten years. Modern Rock tends to
fall between Rock and Alternative Rock..

New Age:
A radio station programming format where
New Age music is played.

Oldies:
A radio format that plays Pop music, Rock
'n Roll, and Rock music of the 50's, 60's and 70's. Or, even R&B
oldies of the 60's and 70's (during the 90's this format was called
Jammin' Oldies). Some stations even focus in specifically on a
certain decade. Stations with the Oldies format sometimes re-create
the sound of the hot AM stations of that period. These stations
are most popular with listeners who grew up during the same era.

Progressive:
A radio station format. The music played
is Rock and AOR. It is usually free form with no playlist involved.

Rock:
A radio station programming format. The
music played is mostly current Rock music, whether single releases
or album cuts. Because of the diversity within Rock music, the
playlists of the various Rock stations will tend to fall within
different stylistic ranges.

Rock AC:
A radio station programming format. The
music played is mostly Rock music released during the past 15
or 20 years. This format is designed for the general Rock listener
who is not interested in following current releases. These stations
include playlists with some Classic Rock and some Current Rock
material. Some of the "name" formats such as "Jack"
include a sprinkling of Pop hits as well.
